Thucydides. Thucydidis Olori filii de bello Peloponnesiaco libri octo. Venice: Excudebat Henricus Stephanus, illustris viri Huldrichi Fuggeri typographus, 1564.
The Reed Collections include a 1564 edition of Thucydides in Greek and Latin, previously owned by sixteenth century Scottish humanist and poet Mark Alexander Boyd (1563-1601). The copy, which bears his autograph in Latin, is heavily annotated in a contemporary hand, especially in the Latin sections.
The chronology and detail of Boyd’s life are uncertain, but he spent most of his adult life in France and continental Europe, alternating between studying and soldiering. Two collections of poetry and prose, chiefly in Latin, were published in his lifetime, at Bordeaux in 1590 and at La Rochelle in 1592. He returned to Scotland in 1595 and died in 1601.
