Once the common stilt of New Zealand, the black stilt Himantopus novaezelandiae is now critically endangered with a breeding population confined to the Mackenzie Basin of South Canterbury and North Otago. As well as predators and habitat degradation, they are threatened by hybridization with the pied stilt Himantopus himantopus.

The displayed illustration, attributed to John Gould and H.C. Richter, features a black stilt or kakī with the closely related pied stilt.
