Before human settlement, New Zealand’s islands were mostly free of mammals and dominated by birds, from the famous moa to the largest eagle that ever lived to the beautiful huia. Yet within a few hundred years, more than a quarter of those birds would disappear forever.

These lost birds are vividly brought to life again by the colour paintings of Paul Martinson (1956-), a New Zealand artist known internationally for his detailed and lifelike paintings of rare and extinct birds.
