At the time of publication of the 1967 Whitcombe & Tombs edition, Buller’s birds had long been considered a classic of New Zealand bird literature. This attractive edition reproduces the 48 stone-plate lithographs of the 1888 second edition. The updated text by eminent ornithologist E.G. Turbott included a succinct appraisal of Buller’s writings in the light of present-day knowledge.

The New Zealand falcon or karearea (Falco novaeseelandiae) was in Buller’s time considered two separate species, the ‘bush hawk’ and the ‘quail hawk’ (depicted here).
