Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (1842-1912) was a Dutch-born artist famed for his bird illustration. For most of his life he lived and worked in England, where he illustrated many of the best-known ornithology books of the nineteenth century.

Keulemans’ work is characterised by its consistency and the rendering of fine detail, in accordance with the demands of scientific illustration. Yet his bird illustration possesses an undeniable vividness which places him above his contemporaries.

The 2012 Te Papa edition contains reproductions of all the plates from the first and second editions and supplement. Each image is accompanied by Buller's descriptive text as well as up-to-date taxonomic information in English and te reo Māori. The displayed illustration of the rifleman, rock wren, and the extinct bush wren is from the second edition of 1888.
