Volume 2 of the second edition of Buller’s Birds is open at the white heron or kōtuku, a cosmopolitan bird whose sole breeding site in New Zealand is near Ōkārito in South Westland. The blue heron depicted is today better known as the reef heron, a rare native found chiefly in Northland (not to be confused with the closely related white-faced heron common in Dunedin’s waterways).
