The success which attended the first edition induced Buller to enter upon a more ambitious undertaking. His knowledge of New Zealand birds (and his collection of specimens) had greatly expanded since 1873. The new and enlarged second edition of 1888 contained fifty plates featuring eighty species, with the accompanying text being much more detailed than that of the first.

The illustrations were produced by a different technique to the first edition (which utilised hand-coloured lithographs), instead producing them by printing in colours (chromolithographs). The illustrations of Keulemans are remarkably lifelike considering he never set foot in New Zealand, and rarely saw living examples of the birds he drew.
