The Native Bird Protection Society was established in 1923 by businessman and war veteran Captain Ernest ‘Val’ Sanderson. It was subsequently renamed the Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand.

The Society’s magazine started as a newsletter from Sanderson to members in 1923. These evolved into a magazine called Birds, from 1924. In 1933, the name of the magazine was changed to Forest and Bird.

From August 1933 onwards, the covers featured the bird paintings of Lily Daff, who had been commissioned by the Society to produce a series of paintings depicting native birds in 1932. Her artwork continued to adorn the quarterly publication well into the 1950s.
