R.A. Falla, R.B. Sibson and E.G. Turbott; illustrations by Chloe Talbot-Kelly. A field guide to the birds of New Zealand and outlying islands. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1967.

First published in 1966, the Field guide was the joint work of three leading New Zealand ornithologists, written for and at the invitation of the New Zealand Ornithological Society.

It was the first comprehensive field guide, covering all the birds of the mainland and surrounding islands. Designed to allow laypersons to identify birds, it includes species descriptions (length, plumage, appearance) as well as information on voice, habitat, range, and nesting habits. The Field guide was illustrated by Chloe Talbot Kelly of the British Museum.

First published in 1966, the Field guide underwent multiple editions during the late 1960s and 1970s and served as the ‘bible’ for generations of New Zealand bird watchers. Thirty years after the publication of the first edition, much new information had become available on the distribution and biology of New Zealand birds, numerous new species had been recorded and taxonomic changes made.

Heather and Robertson’s new Field guide is illustrated by Derek Onley, a respected New Zealand ornithologist, who painted 74 new colour plates depicting all 328 species, and most sub-species, of birds recorded in the New Zealand region up to 1995.
