A parting gift. London; Edinburgh; New York, 1874.
This pocket book of poems has an unusual binding - of Mauchline Ware. The sides are of varnished wood bearing fern designs; the spine, of red pebble-grained leather, has been blocked in gold.
W. & A. Smith, of Mauchline, Ayrshire, developed the manufacture of transfer printed wooden ware which became hugely popular in Victorian times with affluent travellers as gifts and souvenirs. In later forms, photographs replaced transfers.
