Politician Alfred Saunders (1820-1905) is remembered for supporting universal male franchise and votes for women. A man of many talents, he turned to writing after a decline in his fortunes. During the 1880s he wrote these impressively handsome books. They are written for the international audience, and based on his own observation and practical knowledge.

Saunders and Robert McNab met while Members of Parliament, and were both defeated at the 1896 elections. Saunders finally retired then from politics.
