A note inRobert McNab's hand is attached to this item, it reads:

'Under Canvas was published at Parihaka during the 'war' of 1881.It was Mr Ell's copy first probably there is no other copy.'

Mr Ell wasHarry (Henry George) Ell (1862-1934). From a farming family in Halswell, as ayoung man he tried various jobs, but from 1879 to 1881 he served with the ArmedConstabulary. His experiences at the sacking of Parihaka shaped his life, as hewas appalled at the treatment of the Māori people and the destruction ofnative flora. Ell went on to become a printer, parliamentarian, and citycouncillor, but is also remembered for his work on conserving the naturalenvironment around Christchurch.
