Often we cannot tell who donated which magazines or souvenirs to the library. Librarian W. B. McEwan’s own military enrolment is one of few items actually glued into this album full of war memorabilia. McEwan was about 47 years old when he enrolled.

Educated in Otago, Malcolm Ross became a leading political reporter, and correspondent to the Otago Daily Times. He was an official war correspondent from May 1915, and was in a good position to know what printed war material might be available. This letter gives insight into McEwan’s tactics for collecting. Ross commented to his friend Cohen, perhaps ironically, “his persistence deserves success”.
