Mary Allan Ronnie is a retired, prominent New Zealand librarian.

Born in Glasgow in 1926, Ronnie emigrated with her family to New Zealand where she attended Arthur Street School, Otago Girls’ High School (1939-42), and the University of Otago.

Ronnie began her career at Dunedin Public Library in 1941 as an after-school assistant. She was Dunedin City Librarian from 1968 to 1976, and Auckland City Librarian from 1982 to 1985. In 1976, Mary Ronnie became New Zealand’s (and the world’s) first woman National Librarian. She was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for public service in 1982.

Ronnie’s published works include the centennial history of Dunedin Public Library, published in 2008.

Ada Howard Fache (1918-1994) was an influential Dunedin City Librarian. Fache was born in Dunedin and educated at Otago Girls’ High School (1932-35) and King Edward Technical College. She first joined the staff of Dunedin Public Library in 1937 and was appointed Deputy City Librarian in 1948. She succeeded Archie Dunningham as City Librarian (1960-68).

A keen sportswoman, Fache played cricket for Otago and was active in the administration of women’s cricket both nationally and locally. Fache also played golf and wrote the centennial history of the Otago Ladies’ Golf Club, published in 1992.
