Alison Margaret Holst, née Payne (1938-) is a best-selling food writer and television celebrity chef. She attended Otago Girls’ High School (1951-1955) and graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Home Science degree. After a year at Teachers’ College, she lectured in the Foods Department at the School of Home Science before starting her television career. Her first television programme premiered in 1965 and she published her first cookbook the following year. She has written approximately 100 books, including many collaborations with her son Simon. Alison is one of three notable Payne sisters who attended Otago Girls’ High School, the others being mezzo-soprano Patricia Payne and youngest sister Clare Ferguson, a Europe-based food expert and media personality.
