Graily Hewitt. Lettering for students and craftsmen. London: Seeley, Service, 1930.
Reed’s original gift of 1948 included a small collection of reference books about illuminated manuscripts, lettering and autograph collecting. This formed the nucleus of the Reed History of Printing Collection which now numbers 1,600 volumes covering all aspects of the history of the book.
Cases 20-22 contain a sample of the reference books which were part of Reed’s original gift.
Reed taught himself the skills of lettering and illuminating - no doubt with the aid of these very books - and applied his calligraphic skills in embellishing his treasured autograph letter albums.
