With signed author’s inscription of English writer and critic Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936). In 1926, Reed sent this copy to Chesterton, requesting not only an autograph, but to place it “in an inscription … would give me a double portion of pleasure”. Chesterton amusingly complies, with a hint of his own opinion of the worth of this particular book.

A.H. Reed collected several books from the library of Charles Dickens before they became prohibitively expensive. This French translation of The old curiosity shop published in Paris in 1857 contains both his bookplate and book label. It also bears the bookplate of Dickensiana collector Comte Alain de Suzannet (1882-1950).
