The Southern Comedy Players were founded by William Menlove and Bernard Esquilant in Dunedin in 1957. They initially toured South Island towns not reached by the New Zealand Players, but when that company ceased, the Southern Comedy Players ventured nationwide, surviving until 1970. Founded with professional intentions, the Southern Comedy Players were essentially a predecessor of the Fortune Theatre, formed in 1974.
