The New Zealand Players were founded by Richard and Edith Campion in 1952 as a national touring company. The Players presented 30 plays and gave employment to more than 100 actors between 1953 and 1960. Some of them, such as Raymond Hawthorne, later became celebrated actors, producers or theatre practitioners.
