illustrated by F.D. Lohman, Karl Schulte’s Christmas
carols became one of the most ubiquitous of carol collections, enticing
children throughout New Zealand and Australia over a number of decades. One of
the most recognisable of New Zealand published carol books was the edition
issued by the Dunedin-founded firm of Charles Begg & Co. Ltd., who owned
the New Zealand copyright.

published in America in 1938, Karl Schulte’s Christmas carols has been widely reprinted in a range of forms,
featuring numerous different and invariably striking colour images on the front
cover. It contains piano arrangement s with chord symbols for organ and guitar,
and features concise historical notes on the carols.
