Case 9 - Wartime Christmas Cards

Wartime Christmas Cards

Wartime Christmas Cards

The McNab Ephemera Collections includes a small number of printed wartime Christmas cards, chiefly of the 2nd Expeditionary Force in World War II, inscribed by soldiers to friends and family members. Several are addressed to John Wyllie Stewart (1873-1948), and his wife Dorothy Heywood Stewart (nee Trimble, 1887-1974). Mrs Stewart donated to the Library the Walt Whitman Collection of her father William Heywood Trimble upon his death in 1927.

The two cards from Stalag VIII-B in Lamsdorf, Poland, were sent by Alfred Grass of North East Valley to his mother Ada. The stamp ‘geprust’ shows that it had been examined and approved by camp officials.
