The distinctive artwork of Peter McIntyre remained prominent in the Christmas Numbers of the Otago Daily Times & Witness until his death in 1932. The back cover of the 1931 issue, displayed here, features his depictions of the Dunedin Botanic Garden and St Kilda Beach.

The cover image of the 1932 issue, by an unidentified artist, was reproduced years later, for the cover of Hardwicke Knight’s book Otago Cavalcade, 1921-1925 (Allied Press, 1984).

The Christmas number of the Auckland Weekly News was an immensely popular annual issued (under various designations) from the late nineteenth century until the 1960s.

The cover image of this 1934 issue was described in a contemporary advertisement as representing “a smiling girl holding a sheaf of pohutukawa blossoms, the emblem of New Zealand’s mid-summer Christmas.”
