Of the European explorers who visited New Zealand waters after Cook, the most important was Jules Sébastien César Dumont D’Urville (1790-1842). As second in command on the Coquille, he made his first visit in 1824 to the Bay of Islands, where the French had contact with Māori and heard their account of the death of Marion du Fresne.
Beginning in 1826, his second voyage, as commander of the same ship renamed the Astrolabe, would again take him to New Zealand. From January 1827, D’Urville spent almost three months exploring and charting the northern shores of the South Island and the east coast of the North Island to North Cape.
This case contains the second of two volumes of D’Urville’s popular account of his voyage in French, incorporating extracts from the voyages of other navigators, entitled Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde.
