The compiler of this two-volume folio set, John Harris (1667?-1719), was an English writer, scientist and Anglican priest. First published in 1705, this second edition of Harris’ anthology of travel tales contains 39 engraved plates and 23 maps – many more than the plainer first edition. On display from the first volume is Tasman’s map of the Southern Continent, “very exactly Copied from the Original”, and depicting a portion of ‘Hollandia Nova’ and ‘Zeelandia Nova’.

At the time of his formal presentation of his gift to the City of Dunedin in March 1914, Robert McNab erroneously believed Harris’ Voyages to be “the first book published containing mention of New Zealand”.
