Published in 1790, the Narrative of William Bligh (1754-1817) comprises his official report of the Bounty mutiny in 1789. Bligh so diligently recorded his version of events during the epic voyage that he was able to present his journal at court within a few days of his return to London. His published book on the mutiny was in print two months later.

The displayed copy from the McNab Voyages Collection was Captain Bligh’s own private edition, including annotations and has been in New Zealand since at least 1863. The pencil annotation in Bligh’s spidery hand on p.61 reads: “& I have since learned that he died on board a Dutch ship on his passage to the C. of G. Hope”.
