Essie’s family spent several happy years in Weston, 6 -7 kilometres from Oamaru. The community knew her as Mrs Flett, minister’s wife, poet and short story writer. To this list she added a newspaper column. At Weston she developed her first ideas for Sweet Are The Ways (published in 1965).

Pauline Webster’s family lived in Weston. She found a writing mentor in Essie and a best friend in Elizabeth Flett. Pauline recalled Essie’s life there in the parish centenary booklet.
