By 1970, Essie Summers was one of Mills & Boon's most successful writers. Her sales and the popular appeal of her novels produced keen interest. While she replied to readers’ letters, a collective response to many enquiries was required: a life story.

Mills & Boon regarded as a breakthrough the English Woman's Weekly magazine's publication of an illustrated version of Summers' autobiography in serial form. It underlined her status as a bestselling novelist.
