Reed published a large number of works of Māori mythology, legends and folk tales. Most, like those shown here, were highly illustrated and, like Maori Tales of Long Ago and Wonder Tales of Maoriland contained original illustrations. However, Reed also re-cycled many of Dittmer’s images, as in Maui and Myths and Legends of Maoriland. The latter work also included illustrations by George Woods.

Wonder Tales of Maoriland reveals the story of Rata and his encounter with the spirits of the forest. Note the fine representations of forest birds which is a common feature in many of the illustrated volumes.
