Ron Bacon began telling stories with a Māori theme in the 1960s but turned his hand to retelling myth and legend for children in the 1980s, with Maori Legends.  In this series, Bacon worked with three different illustrators: Cliff Whiting, Philippa Stitchbury and Robert Jahnke. All the books in the series had striking covers, as shown here.
