‘Order of New Zealand Investiture Portfolio’, 30 March 2012. SPRH Hotere Collection Ephemera:
On Friday 30 March 2012, Lt. General the Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae visited Dunedin to invest Ralph Hotere with the Order of New Zealand, the country’s highest honour. The Order, established in February 1987, is limited to 20 ordinary members living at any one time. The medal Hotere received on the day already had a strong whakapapa, with previous holders being the Rt Rev. Manuhuia Bennett, the Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa from 1968 to 1981, and Sir Paul Reeves, former Governor-General of New Zealand. Photographs were taken of the celebration at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery which form this ‘Investiture’ portfolio. On display is one spread depicting Hotere, close family and friends enjoying the event. According to sources, Hotere said that ‘I think this is the best day of my life’.
