The illustrated 1660 folio of the King James Bible published by John Ogilby (1600-1676) marked the beginning of illustrated Bibles for the high end of the market. This edition was dedicated, and probably presented to King Charles II by Ogilby. The engraved title page of Solomon enthroned is blatantly royalist in character, “for it is difficult not to see the long-haired king as Charles II, and the twelve small lions as twelve apostolic spaniels” (Norton, The King James Bible 148).

John Field (d. 1668) was a prominent London printer and bookseller active during the Protectorate and Restoration periods. Field was appointed printer to Oliver Cromwell and Parliament from 1649 and was granted by Cromwell a monopoly to print the Bible, alongside Henry Hills from 1655. He was subsequently appointed printer to the University of Cambridge from 1655.
