Symon’s first book, Overkill, is set in Mataura, an unlikely place for a disappearance and murder. For young local constable Sam Shephard it is the first murder she has had to deal with on her own. Shephard is eventually able to solve the murder, but not without some personal consequences.In the other three novels Shephard moves to Dunedin and manages to solve the crimes without offending too many of her superiors. Shephard is a likeable and convincing young police woman operating in a very familiar Dunedin setting.
