A.H. Reed. A XV Century MS. of the Wyclif-Purvey Gospels: An Introduction to the Dunedin Public Library's Copy. Wellington: A.H. & A.W. Reed, 1956.

The original gift of Alfred Hamish Reed (1875-1975) to Dunedin Public Library in 1948 included two vellum medieval manuscripts. Thereafter, he continued to buy manuscripts and advised successive City Librarians in developing the collection throughout the 1950s and 1960s. After his death, the Library honoured Reed’s wishes as outlined in his Deed of Gift by continuing to develop through his bequest what is known as the Alfred and Isabel Reed Collection.

The Reed Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts Collection today numbers twelve bound manuscripts and more than sixty leaves and fragments, ranging in date from the late ninth to the sixteenth century. It is the second largest collection of its type in New Zealand.

Reed wrote many popular histories, including several short books and pamphlets on his own manuscript and Bible collections - a sample are displayed here.
