This case contains editions of early works by Charles Dickens from Reed’s collection. Sketches by Boz, a selection of Dickens’s short tales and sketches, was first published in London in 1836. Displayed here is an 1842 American edition bearing Dickens’ signed presentation inscription to General George Morris (1802-1864), a well-known journalist of the time, whom Dickens met on his first tour of America.

Also displayed are the first editions in book form of Dickens’s first two novels. The posthumous papers of the Pickwick Club was first issued serially in monthly instalments from April 1836 to November 1837. Oliver Twist was first published serially in the periodical Bentley’s miscellany from February 1837 to April 1839.
