Souvenir map. XVIII Corps, 1917
A 1917 greetings card produced for the 18th Corps of the British 5th Army, commemorated the recent battles of the Third Ypres campaign. New Zealand troops fought alongside this army to try to secure Passchendaele Ridge.

The map inside shows the changing line of trenches dated and drawn in red. This was the scene of indescribable losses. The battles left a wilderness of mud, shell-holes, and the skeletons of trees.
Roberts. Christmas Card. France, 1918
On a light note, a Christmas card was sent by Spencer Gannon Smith to his parents in Dunedin.

A caption inside explains the illustration. This is an example of the sort of propaganda coming from either side. Spencer Smith survived the war and became a successful Wellington solicitor.
