The term
‘Gilbert and Sullivan’ refers to the Victorian-era theatrical partnership of
librettist W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900),
and to their popular comic operas created between 1871 and 1896.
From the
late 19th to the mid-20th century, Gilbert and Sullivan opera in
Australasia was dominated by the touring company J.C. Williamson Ltd.

Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society Dunedin Inc. was formed in the early
1950s utilising local talent in various successful performances until 1984.
The
popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan in Dunedin has continued with high-quality
productions by the Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust
occurring between 2002 and 2012.
