Case 13
- Grand Opera 1
Lucia di Lammermoor. Gaetano Donizetti; from Sir Walter Scott’s novel ‘The Bride of Lammermoor’. (Fuller-Gonsalez Italian Grand Opera Company). His Majesty’s Theatre, Dunedin, Oct. 13, 1928.
The
Fuller family were English-born Australian theatrical entrepreneurs whose name
became synonymous with entertainment in New Zealand, especially vaudeville.
Begun in the 1890s by John Fuller (1850-1923), and continued by his sons Sir
Benjamin Fuller (1875-1952) and John Fuller (1879-1959), the business broadened
to include Italian grand opera, as well as motion pictures. Dunedin’s Princess
Theatre in High Street, and Alhambra (later Kings) Theatre in Dowling Street,
were both taken over by the Fullers in the early 1900s.
