As well as poetry, novels and drama, Scott also wrote important works on literature and history. The miscellaneous prose works includes a number of his collected biographical works on eminent British literary figures, including his Life of Dryden, first published in 1808, as part of an 18 volume edition of The works of John Dryden.

Among Scott’s most forgotten works are his essays as a critic of literature, including An essay on chivalry, An essay on the drama and his Essay on romance, which was originally written in 1823 for Encyclopaedia Britannica. In this essay he describes Romance as characterised by “marvellous and uncommon incidents.” Scott subtitled three Waverley novels “a romance’: Ivanhoe, The monastery, and Kenilworth.

The earlier three series of The tales of a grandfather, published between 1827 and 1829, comprised a history of Scotland up until the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-46. Dunedin Public Libraries possesses the first edition of the later series detailing the history of France from Charlemagne to Louis XIV.

Written during Scott’s time of insolvency, the Talesproved conveniently lucrative. A second French series was planned, and the first volume completed, before Scott received news of the death of his beloved ten-year-old grandson John Hugh Lockhart. Scott never returned to the unfinished manuscript.
