Dieri,
or Diyari, is an extinct language of the Australian aborigines who lived in the
neighbourhood of Kopperamana, or Cooper’s District, in South Australia.
Newly
acquired by Dunedin Public Library, the New Testament on display was translated
into Dieri by the Lutheran missionaries J.G. Reuther and Charles Strehlow, and
printed at Tanunda in an edition of 750 copies.

Esperanto
is an artificial language devised in 1887 by Dr Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof
(1859-1917) as an international medium of communication and based on word roots
common to the major European languages.
In 1915,
Zamenhof completed his translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew into
Esperanto. The New Testament was translated by a committee of British clergy
and scholars who also reviewed Zamenhof’s text for eventual publication as a
complete Esperanto Bible by the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1926.
