This early eighteenth century Bible contains the German translation of Martin Luther (1483-1546).

As Luther’s Bible became the most widely read book in Germany, it exerted a commanding influence on the development of the German language. Many pre-Luther German Bible editions exhibit dialectic differences. Early versions of Luther’s text in South Germany required numerous dialectic changes or explanations of words, but within a hundred years Luther’s High German became dominant in schools and churches.

Translations were made into various languages akin to German using Luther’s version as a basis, such as Dutch, Swedish, Icelandic and Danish.
