Marsh set four of her novels in New Zealand, three of them being first published between 1937 and 1945, with the fourth appearing in in 1980. Many of her ‘English’ novels have New Zealand characters in them, as in A Surfeit of Lampreys. Her descriptions of the New Zealand landscape demonstrate not only her love for her own country, but also the keenness of her artist’s eye.

Marsh’s books were translated into many languages as can be seen by this Dutch copy of her first New Zealand novel Vintage Murder.
